Montparnasse Tower

The flagship skyscraper of the 14th arrondissement, the Tour Montparnasse was inaugurated in 1973. With a height of 210 metres, for over 40 years the Tour Montparnasse was the tallest skyscraper in France until the construction of the Tour First in the La Défense business district. It’s still the tallest skyscraper in inner Paris.

Take the fastest elevator in Europe up to the 56th floor of the Tower and admire the panoramic view of the City of Light. Take a break and enjoy the terrace and the 360 Café while contemplating Paris and its beautiful monuments.

The Catacombes of Paris

The Catacombes de Paris can be accessed from the Place Denfert Rochereau. Open to the public since 1809, this labyrinth of tunnels is the largest ossuary in the world, covering an area of 11,000 m2.

It all began in the 18th century when Paris began experiencing health problems due to its overflowing cemeteries. The Parisian authorities decided to move the remains underground. Take a 1,500-metre long journey, 20 metres deep (the equivalent of a 5-storey building!).

Montparnasse cemetery

Created at the beginning of the 19th century in the south of Paris, the Cimetière Montparnasse is best known for the famous people interred there. Located a few steps from our Paris 14 hotel, it’s the second largest necropolis in Paris. Only the Cimetière du Père-Lachaise is bigger. The Cimetière Montparnasse is the last resting place of Charles Baudelaire, Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir, Guy de Maupassant and Serge Gainsbourg, among many other famous names.

Each year, thousands of visitors flock to the cemetery. It’s a veritable place of pilgrimage for some. Fans place packets of cigarettes on Gainsbourg's grave or poems on Baudelaire’s.

Montsouris park

The creation of the Parc Montsouris took place during the Second Empire as part of a project designed to provide Parisians with green spaces at the four cardinal points of Paris: the Parc des Buttes-Chaumont to the north, the Bois de Boulogne to the west, the Bois de Vincennes to the east and the Parc Montsouris to the south. Baron Haussmann decided to build the park in 1860, but it wasn’t until 1878 that work was completed.

Many sculptures adorn the Parc Montsouris, such as La Mort du Lion by Edmond Desca and Drame au désert by Georges Gardet. Inspired by London's parks, Parc Montsouris is an English-style garden. That is, not overly elaborate and ordered, but as natural as possible. The park is 20 minutes by public transport from your Paris 14 hotel.

The Cartier Foundation

The Fondation Cartier is a private institution dedicated to contemporary art and has been located on the Boulevard Raspail, close to our Paris 14 hotel, since 1994. This impressive glass and steel building was designed by the architect Jean Nouvel. A cedar planted in 1823 by the writer François-René is visible from the street thanks to the glass facade.

The main goal of the Fondation Cartier is the discovery of new artists, offering them a springboard to international fame. All areas of contemporary creation are exhibited there, including photography, video, painting and fashion.

Les Grands Voisins

Formerly a hospital building, the Hôpital Saint-Vincent-de-Paul was renovated by the Grands Voisins (Big Neighbours) project in 2015. Located between Port-Royal and Denfert-Rochereau, Les Grands Voisins comprises 3,500 m2 of exterior space, 140 structures and 100 accommodation places. Based on the principles of sharing and solidarity, this project makes it possible to house disadvantaged people, while also providing a showcase for various associations, start-ups, workshops and craftspeople.

Take a stroll and discover the many artisan workshops, as well as the Creative Resource Centre. La Ressourcerie is a shop that deals in reused and repurposed objects and materials. You can savour the excellent seasonal dishes of the restaurant l’Oratoire and enjoy the La Lingerie refreshment bar and party room.

Les Grands Voisins is a space open to all.

The Bourdelle museum

Situated close to the Gare Montparnasse and just 10 minutes by Metro from our Paris 14 hotel is the Musée Bourdelle. Opened in 1949, this museum is housed in the former apartments, studios and garden of the French sculptor, Antoine Bourdelle. Inspired by Rodin, Bourdelle planned to create his own museum, and this is the result.

The museum-studio displays sculptures in bronze, marble and sandstone, as well as drawings and photographs by the artist. The collection includes 3,000 sculptures, 4,000 drawings and 15,000 photographs.

The Zadkine museum

Located a 10-minute walk from the Hotel Aiglon, the Musée Zadkine is dedicated to the work of the Russian sculptor Ossip Zadkine. Inaugurated in 1982, the museum includes the artist’s house and studios. There you can admire 70 sculptures inspired by African and Egyptian art, cubism and primitivism. The museum garden was designed to accommodate sculptures inspired by forests and trees.

A notable feature of this museum is that the visually impaired can touch the creations of Ossip Zadkine, as this was the artist's main wish, and information about the sculptures is provided in Braille.

The Giacometti Institute

Housed in an Art Deco hotel close to our Paris 14 hotel, the Institut Giacometti recreates the 24 m2 studio of the artist Alberto Giacometti, where he spent nearly 40 years. Furniture, easel, brushes, chair, glasses; all are authentic as the artist’s widow, Annette, kept everything. Plunge into the fascinating world of Alberto Giacometti by way of some fifty sculptures, numerous paintings and drawings, and even walls painted by the artist.

The Virtual Center Paris

Coming right up to date, the Virtual Center Paris, located in the Montparnasse district, offers state of the art virtual reality experiences. Everyone can enjoy family friendly VR fun and excitement as the Virtual Center Paris welcomes young people from 8 years old as well as beginners.

In the footsteps of great artists around our hotel Paris 14

Many artists, intellectuals and Montparnos have set foot on the soil of the Montparnasse district, leaving traces there, a few minutes on foot from the Hotel Paris 14.

Ernest Hemingway

Ernest Miller Hemingway was an American writer and journalist who lived in Montparnasse. He was born July 21st, 1899 in the United States and committed suicide on July 2nd, 1961. His experience of the First World War made a profound impression on Hemingway and served as the basis for his novel, A Farewell to Arms, considered one of the greatest English language novels of the 20th century. In 1953, Hemingway received the Pulitzer Prize and the Nobel Prize for Literature for his novel, The Old Man and the Sea, his last fictional work.

Ossip Zadkine

Born July 4th, 1890 in Russia and dying on November 25th, 1967 in Paris, Ossip Zadkine was a French artist of Russian origin who is considered one of the great masters of cubist sculpture. His first works were carved in wood and stone in Russia in 1908. It was only in 1910 that he opened his first studios and exhibited his sculptures.

To date, 612 works by the artist are listed. Zadkine’s friends included Amedeo Modigliani, Henry Moore and Marc Chagall. He rests in peace in Paris, in the Montparnasse Cemetery, not far from our Paris 14 hotel.

Antoine Bourdelle

The French sculptor Antoine Bourdelle was born October 30th, 1861 in Montauban and died October 1st, 1929. In 1900, Bourdelle designed the interiors of the Musée Grévin theatre, including the masks and a bas-relief entitled Les Nuées located atop the stage. The same year, along with the sculptors Auguste Rodin and Jules Desbois, he founded a school of sculpture in Montparnasse, where he lived. It was not until 1910 that Bourdelle obtained public recognition with his sculpture Hercules the Archer.

The Musée Bourdelle is located about ten minutes by Metro from our Paris 14 hotel.

Kiki de Montparnasse

Alice Ernestine Prin, nicknamed the Queen of Montparnasse and better known as Kiki de Montparnasse, was a model, muse and lover of famous artists as well as a singer, dancer, cabaret manager, and even a film actor during the interwar years. She posed for Amedeo Modigliani, but also Tsugouharu Foujita, who painted Nu couché à la toile de Jouy in 1922.

With her distinctive hairstyle, eyes highlighted with kohl, and red painted lips, she became the embodiment of liberal and creative Montparnasse. In 1936, Kiki opened her own cabaret, L’Oasis, later the Chez Kiki. André Laroque, pianist and accordionist of the Chez Kiki, became her new lover, helped her off drugs and typed the manuscript of her autobiography, Kiki’s Memoirs.

Amedeo Modigliani

Italian painter and sculptor Amedeo Clemente Modigliani was born July 12th, 1884 in Italy and died January 24th, 1920 in Paris. Moving to Montmartre in 1906, the young artist embraced the bohemian lifestyle and met other creative individuals such as Pablo Picasso, Jean Cocteau and Max Jacob.

In 1909, Modigliani settled in the Montparnasse district and devoted himself to sculpture. However, his efforts in this medium were severely restricted when the dust aggravated his tuberculosis and so he returned to painting. The Musée de l’Orangerie, situated just 30 minutes from our Paris 14 hotel, has 5 works by the artist on display.

Pablo Picasso

The famous Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist and theatre designer Pablo Ruiz Picasso was born October 25th, 1881 and died April 8th, 1973. He is considered one of the founders of cubism along with the painter Georges Braque.
Particularly notable among his 1,885 paintings are Guernica and Les Demoiselles d´Avignon. He produced nearly 50,000 works, including 30,000 prints, 7,089 drawings, 1,228 sculptures, 2,880 ceramics, 342 tapestries and 150 sketchbooks.

Taking up residence in Montmartre in 1904, Picasso became acquainted with many artists such as Henri Matisse, Max Jacob and Amedeo Modigliani. As with Modigliani, the Musée de l’Orangerie has 12 works by Picasso. The Musée National Picasso, located 30 minutes from our Paris 14 hotel, is entirely dedicated to the artist and his creations, but also includes works by other artists, selected from Picasso’s private collection.
